DIVISION Two side Berwick City has narrowly been beaten by Heatherton United 1-0 at Jack Thomas Reserve.
Berwick entered the game knowing they could match it with their opponents after holding them off for a 0-0 draw in round two but an early goal to Heatherton’s Meldin Kelhic snuffed out any chance Berwick had of repeating the performance.
The loss is Berwick’s sixth by one goal leaving the local side fixed at the bottom of the ladder with only one win.
Berwick will face the out-of-form Eastern Lions this week and will be hoping to earn three points before embarking on a tough month.
If they lose to the Lions, relegation will almost be a certainty for Berwick unless they can steal some points from league-leaders Southern Stars, Casey Comets or Morwell. The Casey Comets enjoyed another Division Two win, this time holding off the Southern Suburbs to win 1-0 at Comets Stadium.
Casey now sits third on the Division Two ladder but 10 points behind the Southern Stars in first position.
In Provisional One soccer, Doveton has moved within two points of the promotion zone after smashing Bundoora 4-0 at Waratah Reserve.
Doveton’s Grant Lane scored twice while in-form striker Leon Buhic scored for the fourth time in as many games.
The win puts them equal on points with Monash University and only two points away from second-place Mooroolbark.
Provisional Two side Endeavour United had a 1-1 draw with the University of Melbourne at Princes Park while the Berwick Kings defeated Whitehorse United 1-0 at Betula Park to move equal on points with Endeavour in the middle of the table.
