CASEY-SOUTH Melbourne is set to sign Hampshire top-order batsman Chris Benham as the man to fill the big shoes of former captain-coach Roger Sillence.
Benham, 24, has represented England at junior level and has come with a recommendation from Australian superstar Shane Warne.
The right-hander will not arrive until the morning of the Swans’ Victorian Premier Cricket opener on 6 October and is unlikely to play in that fixture.
Casey-South Melbourne coach John Hayes was pleased to welcome Benham aboard after a lengthy process.
“Chris worked out to be the best option for us. He is likely to open in one-dayers and possibly play at three or four in two-dayers,” Hayes said.
“He plays his shots and there are some pretty big wraps on him at Hampshire, and he comes across as a pretty good young guy.”
