Let’s get a (night)life: group

By Melissa Meehan
A GROUP of Casey residents unhappy with the lack of local nightlife have set up an online petition in an attempt to give the community a voice and, in turn, enhance nightlife in the area.
Organiser Mimmo Torcasio said the purpose of the petition was to see a better nightlife operate in Casey.
“We’ve created this petition so that the community of Casey can comment on the website to support the petition and hopefully find a solution,” Mr Torcasio said.
Mr Torcasio said that the petition does not only focus on the introduction of licensed venues.
“I want to satisfy a range of demographics from young to old,” he said.
“Not everyone likes the same things so a diverse range of nightlife would be great.
“It’s about the bigger picture. Growing what we don’t already have.
“Creating a vibrant, active nightlife environment and Casey not looking like a ‘ghost town’ when you drive through it at night,” Mr Torcasio said.
The City of Casey has a growing population of about 20,000 18 to 25 year olds and a total population of about 225,000.
Mr Torcasio said it was important that a short and long-term solution to the lack of nightlife is established.
“I think that more people are walking the streets at night,” he said.
“More house parties are operating and getting out of control because there is nothing else to do.
The introduction of more cinemas and family friendly alternatives is also an important issue raised by Mr Torcasio.
“I think that the majority of Casey’s community would agree that the nightlife in Casey for youth is shocking, but not just for youth, all ages in general,” Mr Torcasio said.
“The increase of all types of nightlife activities would be great, people of all ages go to cinemas.”
Mr Torcasio said the problem of people becoming a public nuisance when walking the streets at night could be related to the lack of nightlife in Casey.
But, he said there are no promises that the introduction of nightlife facilities would minimise the occurrence of late-night incidents.
Applauding the proposed Casey Towers development for ending the ‘nightlife drought’, Mr Torcasio said that he hopes that it will attract more investors and developers into Casey.
“Casey is so big, but it has so little to do. It’s great to see such an enormous development get proposed for our city,” Mr Torcasio said.
Members of the community are invited to support the petition for a better nightlife in Casey at www.caseynightlifepetition.com.
