Millie’s still on a mission for Ben

MILLIE Whitehead was as happy as anyone to see Berwick last week.
The 25-year-old had cycled more than 450 kilometres in five days and arriving in the leafy City of Casey suburb meant her lengthy charity bike ride was almost complete.
But after cycling from her home town of Albury, there was no pain on Ms Whitehead’s face – just a beaming smile.
Ms Whitehead knew she was only about five hours away from reaching Warragul and completing a journey she vowed to do when her close friend Ben Irwin died from leukaemia.
St Kilda star and friend Justin Koschitzke rode with Ms Whitehead from Kalkallo to Berwick for support and to help raise the profile of the fundraising effort.
“We have set out to raise $10,000,” she said.
Central Star Auto Haus in Berwick helped out with a $1000 donation, with Millie urging other businesses and individuals to also donate to the cause.
“Ben was a healthy 22-year-old guy, who loved playing football, cricket and any other sport.
“During one of his footy games he received a corky. Two weeks passed but the corky remained.
“He went to get some antibiotics from the doctors and was diagnosed with leukaemia. Two weeks later Ben passed away,” Ms Whitehead said.
The primary education student said she was keen for more businesses to jump on board and help sponsor her ride.
“I will be appreciative of any assistance I can get.”
Although not a regular bike rider, the vibrant young woman said the toughest challenge she had faced on her journey was an electrical storm.
