Soccer set to kick off

BERWICK City Soccer Club is getting into top gear for what it hopes will be another strong season.
The club enjoyed a good 2005 following promotion to State League Three.
Senior coach Tony Saunders said he was very pleased with the turnout when the club returned to training last Tuesday.
“Quite a number of new faces took part looking to make an early impact as it is expected that the majority of seniors will return,” he said. “However all players will be given an opportunity to push for spots in the senior squads.”
Saunders said as always the younger players from under-15 to under-18 were also taking part as some of these would look to press for positions in the senior squads.
“This is quite a transition for them as they normally don’t start for at least another month and the intensity of training is probably more than they are used to,” he said. “Early training is geared to being ready for the start of the season, but already the energy level is quite high as we look to build further on the momentum created from last season’s success.”
Anyone interested can attend training sessions on Tuesday and Thursday nights starting at 7pm sharp. The clubrooms are open from 6.30pm and players from under-15 to under-18 are welcome to take part.
Saunders said a senior women’s team would be entered into FFV competition this season and the club was excited about the future prospects of this group which included a number of experienced senior and junior players.
Pre-season training for girls will begin on Thursday, 19 January from 7pm and then every Tuesday and Thursday thereafter.
These sessions are open to players looking to play seniors, under-18 or under-16.
The inclusion of the senior women’s team will complete the picture at the club and seven junior girls’ teams will now have a pathway to senior football without having to leave the club.
“We hope that quite a number of past players eligible for seniors will return to be part of what promises to be a terrific year,” he said.
The club’s registration day will be held at Jack Thomas Reserve, Fox Road, Narre Warren North on 12 February from 10am until 1.30pm.
