Saving water has a silver lining

NARRE Warren North Primary School students are doing more than their fair share when it comes to saving water.
The school recently became one of South East Water’s first silver accredited schools under the Water – Learn it! Live it! program.
The program is about water education and conservation and requires schools to meet six milestones to achieve a bronze, silver or gold level.
Narre Warren North received a framed certificate and a silver sticker will be placed on the Water Learn It! Live It! sign to inform the community of its commitment to a sustainable water future.
The program is part of the State Government’s Our Water Our Future behaviour change campaign to educate Victorians on the importance of saving water.
Over the past year, Narre Warren North Primary School has been working with South East Water to integrate water conservation into its curriculum and reduce water use throughout its grounds.
Principal Ian Norman said: “Grade 3 studied a unit on water and student leaders attended a conference which taught them how to conserve water at school.
“We are very pleased to be involved in a program that is so beneficial for students, teachers and families – we aim to implement everything learnt in the classroom at home.”
To reach silver accreditation for the Water – Learn it! Live it! Program, the school achieved a series of milestones including whole school participation in National Water Week activities and more than one year level learning about water conservation in the curriculum.
South East Water Education project manager Emma Malinowski said the program helps raise awareness about current and future water issues, and also encourages students to reduce consumption at home and school.
“The kit gives teachers the resources they need to develop fun and interesting ways to teach students about saving water,” Mrs Malinowski said.
“We encourage all schools in our service area to register for the program and become Water – Learn it! Live it! accredited.
“Narre Warren North Primary School is a great example of a school that is committed to a sustainable water future,” she said.
