City triple earns three points

BERWICK City’s Men’s State League Division Three South East side had a good win on Saturday, defeating Brandon Park 3-1.
City looked in control all match, and created some excellent scoring opportunities.
The opening goal came midway through the first half, when Marc Davidson converted a penalty after being dragged down in the box.
Soon after, a series of ricochets in City’s attacking area saw the ball find its way to Orlando Mejias, who struck a clean half-volley past the keeper to send his side up 2-0 at the main break.
Down to 10 men for much of the second half, City continued to attack and Nikolaos Papadopoulos scored his side’s third, putting the result beyond doubt.
Brandon Park scored a consolation goal with three minutes to go through Ahmed Hakim, but it was too late.
Berwick City coach Joe Carrol said the result was important for his side’s position on the ladder.
“It was a relief to get the win,” he said. “It’s such a tight league this year.
“I thought we were in a false position on the ladder.
“We’ll be going out all guns firing against Boroondara next week to get the three points.”
Carrol said his side was looking good to tackle the pointy end of the season.
“Running into the important part of the season, we’ll probably have a full squad with match fitness,” he said.
In other games, Doveton and Springvale City fought out a 2-2 draw at Waratah Reserve.
Muaz Omerdic and Franco Bove both scored for Springvale, while Leon Buhic continued his good form with two for Doveton.
Endeavour United suffered a disappointing 5-1 loss to Sandringham City, in part due to a hat-trick from Oran Harel.
After falling behind 2-0 at the break United lost touch with the game, with Theo Papadopoulous and Paul McCluskey also scoring for the victors, while Muhammed Kirmaci was the lone goal scorer for United.
In Men’s State League Division Two South East, the Casey Comets went down to the Eastern Lions 1-0.
Travelling out to Gardiners Creek Reserve, the Comets kept the game tight in the first half, but conceded a goal to Ray Markley after the break to surrender the match.
The Lions moved within two points of the Comets on the ladder in the battle for eighth spot.
