A COW rescue in Narre Warren has saved two lives, not one as was first thought.
The News last week reported the efforts of six Narre Warren State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers in saving a cow stuck in thick mud.
RSPCA inspector Natalie Linney was on hand during the rescue to offer support and travelled to the site the next day to make sure the cow had made a full recovery.
What Ms Linney discovered shocked and delighted her.
“It wasn’t hard to find the cow because she still had mud all over her, but her teats were clean. I then saw she had a calf,” Ms Linney said.
She said the calf was lucky to be alive as it was only two weeks old and had yet to been weaned off its mother.
“We saved two lives in one hit. Had the cow not been saved from the mud her calf would have died,” she said.
Berwick resident Tania Harris discovered the cow on a walk with her dog, which helped her to find the stricken animal.
“My dog was acting funny and wanted to walk a certain way. We don’t normally go that way but I followed my dog and looked to see what was wrong and I saw the cow,” Ms Harris said.
A heavily pregnant Ms Harris said she was delighted to find out that simply discovering the cow had saved a second animal.
“Being pregnant myself I was extremely excited that I had saved two lives, including a baby calf,” she said.
Ms Linney was grateful towards the SES crew who coordinated the rescue and lifted the cow to safety.
