CHISHOLM Institute of TAFE students proved they are up there with the best budding designers in the country, taking out several awards in the 2005 Southern Cross Package Design Awards.
Among the winners were Jasmine Mortimer of Endeavour Hills who won the Silver award in the Packaging Innovations for Fresh Cut Produce category, while Tze Wei Loh of Narre Warren South gained a Special Commendation Award in the Label Design For New Beer Product category.
Hundreds of entries were received for the 11 award categories not only from TAFE institutions but also universities and private design colleges.
Chisholm won an award in four of the five categories they entered, reinforcing the reputation of the TAFE’s Diploma of Arts course, according to Chisholm Graphic Arts Program Coordinator Gary Heath.
“It’s a really big deal. These are prestigious awards and the competition is fierce,” Mr Heath said.
“Not only have the Chisholm students won against student designers from other TAFE institutes, they’ve also won against universities and private schools, Australiawide.
“Winning these awards shows that these kids are more than capable of cutting it with the best of them.
“It also opens up job opportunities and is a great experience for the students in handling ‘reallife’ design work. Entrants must work to a strict design brief with a deadline, as they would working in industry.”
