A CONVOY of Country Fire Authority (CFA) vehicles has transported non-perishable food to families affected by drought in Victoria’s western district.
Food was loaded on to 17 CFA vehicles and transported to Horsham, the convoy departing from the CFA Westernport Area headquarters in Dandenong on Saturday.
Vehicles in the convoy came from Hampton Park, Hallam, Cranbourne, Springvale and Dandenong.
“The response has been nothing short of fantastic – overwhelming really,” Region 8 operations manager Steve Warrington said.
“Donations have rolled in from across the region, from Dandenong to Wonthaggi to Bunyip and Rye.
“And when you consider our members have been so busy helping battle major blazes in Gippsland and the state’s north east, it is really a testament to their community spirit that they are also working to help out fellow Victorians suffering from the drought,” he said.
Westernport brigades were moved to organise the food package campaign because those affected by the drought include CFA volunteers.
A number of fire stations in the Westernport area were used as collection points.
Contributions included baked beans, flour, coffee and sugar and even socks.
Support also came from members of the public and local businesses and charities.
Christian Community Food Services in Horsham received the food supplies. The not-for-profit organisation will distribute the food on the CFA’s behalf.
A trivia night has been organised by Westernport area volunteers to raise money to buy food for the campaign.
The trivia night will be held at the Cranbourne Hall on Saturday 17 February.
