Heavy metal tribute to Brock

MOTORSPORT champion Peter Brock sped around the local Sandown Raceway many times throughout his career.
Now the man’s racing achievements have been honoured with a huge collection of winning cars and personal memorabilia that has been assembled as part of the Champions Brock Experience.
The attraction recently opened in a massive shed in the Queensland coastal resort town of Yeppoon.
The vast array of Brock’s favourite racing cars, driving suits, trophies and a spectacular light and sound show has been assembled by his close friend Peter Champion.
Mr Champion has also compiled some never-before-seen footage of Brock that forms part of an amazing light and sound show.
Brock was killed on 8 September 2006 when he crashed his car into a tree during the Targa Rally in Western Australia. He was in second place at the time. His navigator, Mick Hone survived the crash.
Brock was celebrated as the King of the Mountain for winning nine times at Bathurst. He also dominated the Sandown Raceway, winning nine races between 1973 and 1984.
Mr Champion first met Brock at a charity dinner in the early 1990s.
He already owned several of Brock branded road cars and was a collector of vehicles when not working on his earth moving business in the Queensland coalfields.
Mr Champion decided to create a purpose-built exhibition of Brock’s cars.
Brock was interested in the project and visited the site several times during the planning and construction stage.
Mr Champion said that following his friend’s death, the push was on to display the cars so the public could see the life and racing achievements of Brock.
It is only in the past 12 months that the display has developed to Mr Champion’s satisfaction.
He said the items had been collected over several decades and he was keen to display them close to where he lived in Yeppoon.
“I live here and you don’t have a big shed full of toys where you can’t play with them. I come in here every day I’m in town,” he said.
“There are some of my own personal toys as well including a Boss Hoss V8 motorbike, a Russian fighter jet and a race boat.”
Tiger Airlines recently opened up Rockhampton to Melbourne travellers by offering direct flights to the Central Queensland capital for as little as $59.
