IT WAS anything but a storm in a tea cup for members of a local community centre who are toasting a $5000 windfall.
Staff and students at the Narre Community Learning Centre have been collecting tokens from Bushells and Lan-Choo tea packets over the past year and were presented with the money last week.
The centre won the money through the quarterly prize-draw as part of the Bushells Community Cash program.
The cash injection will be used to help fund part of the successful ‘Get Back Into Life’ youth program being conducted at the centre.
Community development executive manager Kay Vrieze said the program was essential in helping many young local residents undertake vital education sessions that will help their future employment prospects.
“It’s a fantastic program designed to support our young adults gain valuable literacy, numeracy and social skills,” Ms Vrieze said.
The initiative allows for young people to continue to learn in a relaxed and friendly environment when they have failed to adapt to traditional secondary school teaching practices.
Ms Vrieze said everyone at the Narre Warren-based centre was delighted with the unexpected win and the money would be a great boost to the operation of the program.
“We want to thank everyone for drinking Bushells tea and bringing in their tokens to us,” Ms Vrieze said.
