THE Dandenong and District Junior Football League (DDJFL) enjoyed a successful Queen’s Birthday weekend of interleague competition at venues across the state.
The AFL Victoria Metropolitan Junior Championships saw three DDJFL teams in action in the under 15 Division One, under 14 Division One and under 14 Division Two age groups.
They achieved mixed success, with the under 14 Division One side winning both its matches, the under 15s splitting their contests and the under 14 Division Two outfit losing both of its clashes.
The third round of the championship will be played on Wednesday 18 June.
The region’s best Youth Girls players also competed for the South East and emerged victorious in both of their games to qualify for 5 July’s grand final.
On Sunday, the DDJFL faced off with the Waverley Junior Football Association in the under 10, under 11, under 12 and under 13 age groups, prevailing in all but the under 11s.
The under 10 outing was arguably the most exciting, as the DDJFL came from behind at three-quarter time to post a one-point win – 5.4.34 to 3.15.33.
DDJFL and Fountain Gate under 10 coach Steve Piper, whose son Reece was one of the two co-captains, was thrilled with his squad’s endeavour.
“The boys’ last quarter was nothing short of fantastic and they stood up to the task asked of them and got us over the line by one point,” he said.
Fountain Gate’s Zac Atkinson drilled three goals.
On 6 July, the DDJFL takes on Frankston District Junior Football League at Lois Twohig Reserve.
