EIGHT-YEAR-OLD Nicholas Lee will bravely put on a smile tomorrow (Friday) as he watches the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) Good Friday Appeal.
The young boy only returned to his Hallam home on Monday after having a major leg operation at the world-renowned hospital.
Nicholas, along with parents Sharon and Greg, knows only too well the support and quality care that is offered to all patients at the hospital.
Ms Lee said the nurses, doctors and surgeons were extremely caring and made the whole family feel as comfortable as possible during the three-night stay.
“He had a major joint re-alignment on his knee. Basically all the muscles and tendons have grown out of place down the side of his leg,” she said.
“If he didn’t have the operation he would have ended up being permanently in a wheelchair.”
The Cranbourne Christian College grade three student will now have a great quality of life and only be restricted from playing competitive sports.
Ms Lee said she had always donated during the appeal but this year’s event would take on extra significance.
She said she would definitely be encouraging people to give up a few dollars.
“Absolutely. It is a great cause,” she said.
The Good Friday Appeal has been raising funds for the RCH since 1931 when a group of sportsmen and journalists organised the first ever appeal.
Since then, the appeal has raised more than $158 million with a record amount of more than $10 million donated in 2006.
Money raised is used to purchase medical equipment and to fund research into a range of childhood illnesses.
People can call 9292 1166 from tomorrow (Friday) to donate.
