ANNUAL horse riding event Riding of the Bounds has been postponed due to mild concerns of an outbreak of equine influenza (EI).
Following advice from the Department of Primary Industries (DPI), the City of Casey announced its decision last week pending a mid- year review.
City of Casey mayor Janet Halsall said while the potential for an outbreak of EI was low, the council had taken the decision as a precautionary measure.
“The decision to postpone the event was made reluctantly. However council has acted in the best interests of the event and horse sector as a whole,” Cr Halsall said.
EI has caused the cancellation or deferment of a range of large horse events across Victoria.
“Council will review the situation mid year. Hopefully the threat of EI will have diminished considerably by then,” Cr Halsall said.
Riding of the Bounds is part of a 550-year-long celebration which involves local residents riding on horseback around the Berwick-Upon-Tweed Borough in a traditional ceremony to protect its borders.
The event held in Casey celebrates the Global Friendships relationship between the City of Casey and Berwick-Upon-Tweed in Northumberland, United Kingdom.
This year’s Riding of the Bounds was set to be the 20th anniversary of the event.
