Tough first round for Coelho

- Marc McGowan– Marc McGowan

ENDEAVOUR Hills rising star Andrew Coelho took to the court at the Australian Open yesterday (Wednesday) in his pursuit of tennis glory.
Coelho, 19, was given a wildcard into the doubles draw after bettering his singles ranking by almost 400 places last year.
The left-hander played alongside 25-year-old Alun Jones, who also received a wildcard into the singles event.
The pair drew a tough first round match-up against top-seeded Americans Bob and Mike Bryan, but were sure to have plenty of support playing on show court three.
Scores from the match were not available when the News went to press.
It was Coelho’s second appearance in his home grand slam tournament after he reached the second round of the doubles with fellow Australian Carsten Ball last year.
The teenager is currently ranked 372 on the men’s tour and is a member of the Australian Institute of Sport’s exclusive tennis program.
