HALLAM residents may soon have their own bank.
They turned out in force last Saturday in the push to establish a Bendigo Bank branch at Spring Square.
Members of the steering committee said they were thrilled with the response so far.
More than $100,000 has already been pledged.
Committee member Dianne Wilson is welcoming anyone wanting to join the group.
“Our biggest need now is support for the committee. We need to spread the load,” Ms Wilson said.
The committee meets fortnightly and has an information stall at the shopping strip every Saturday morning.
“As long as the pledges keep rolling in we will keep working.”
The group expects to reach the target of $750,000 within about 12 months.
“There are two ways people can pledge their support: financially or by pledging to open an account.”
Ms Wilson said a feasibility study would proceed once the pledges reached the target amount.
“It will be great for the community. The beauty of community branches is that 50 per cent of the profits are kept by the branches to give back to community clubs.”
