NARRE Warren’s Geoff Emery had his best round of the year at Winton on the weekend, placing eighth overall in round five of the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series.
Racing at his home track, Emery was in good form and had an improved car, with the gearbox troubles of the round before well and truly forgotten.
Emery took 154 points from the weekend, his best result in the series, following his 134 points from the Queensland 400, two weeks before.
Emery thundered through the qualifying in his VZ Commodore, qualifying tenth fastest, just 1.1 seconds off Steve Owen’s pole time.
He continued his good form through the first race, where he finished eighth, then backed up for the reverse grid on Sunday morning with a seventh placing – his best for the round.
He was on track for another good result in the third race before a car in front slid off, then carried debris back on the track, which caused Emery’s Commodore to slide out costing him valuable time.
Unable to fight his way back through the field he finished in 20th place in the final race, dropping him to eighth overall for the weekend.
Emery remains 16th overall in the Championship, but moved within 10 points of Damian Assaillit in 15th.
Emery said he was pleased that he managed to stay out of trouble for most of the weekend.
“I’m very happy with the result, very happy with the race pace and we just want to maintain it for the rest of the year,” he said.
“I pretty much just want to remain in the top 10… it would be nice to get a top five (finish), but we’ve got to be realistic.”
His team will enjoy a two-month break before the penultimate round at Bathurst in October.
