BERWICK City continued its good form knocking over bottom side Endeavour United 2-0 in their State League Division Three South East clash on Saturday at Reema Reserve.
It was far from an easy victory, however, with Endeavour throwing everything it could at the side as it fought for its spot in the division.
Berwick coach Joe Carrol conceded that Endeavour were on top for most of the first half, even though his side took a one-goal lead into the break.
“They were on top for most of it (the first half) – they were on top until they got to the 18-yard box, then they ran out of ideas,” he said.
“Defensively in the 18-yard box, we probably had a good game.
“We had three chances in the first half and we took one of them … I think the difference on the day was the finishing.”
That chance was a magnificent play from Nikolaos Papadopoulos, who received a high ball in the penalty box, chested it down, beat his defender and fired a shot.
The keeper blocked his shot, but Orlando Mejias was on hand to knock in the rebound and give his side the lead.
After half-time United attacked hard, pushing players up and leaving their defence exposed, and City capitalised when the side rebounded quickly, with the United keeper blocking the first shot but Mejias collecting the ball and finding the net, scoring his second for the match.
Carrol said he was not surprised that the bottom side put up such a good fight, given their relegation prospects.
“I was pleased when we won, definitely, it was a tough game … they’re bottom of the ladder, they’re fighting for their lives.
“They were a bit stiff (not to win), really.”
In other games, Doveton went down 2-0 to Croydon City at Dorset Recreational Reserve on Saturday.
Goals to Jovan Videkanic and Samuel Jennens ensured the Doves stayed in ninth place – just one point clear of the relegation zone – with three rounds to play.
In State League Division Two South East, the Casey Comets had a 0-0 draw with South Springvale.
