STAR judge on Channel 7’s Battle of the Choirs Jonathon Welch sang with the choir at an Endeavour Hills school this week.
The founding music director of the Choir of Hard Knocks spoke to the budding musicians at Thomas Mitchell Primary School on Tuesday about the upcoming nominations for the Australian of the Year Awards.
Welch was awarded Australia’s Local Hero in 2008.
“Being awarded the Australian of the Year, Local Hero was the greatest honour I could ever imagine as the nomination comes from the people within the Australian community,” Welch said.
“I am inspired to try even harder, to be the best that I can be and continue to make a contribution through music to this magnificent country that has given me so much in return.”
With less than three weeks to go until nominations for the 2009 awards close, MP Anthony Byrne said the Australian of the Year Awards gave the community an opportunity to recognise outstanding achievement.
A person can only be considered for Australian of the Year Awards if they have been nominated before the end of August.
The four awards categories include Australian of the Year, Senior Australian of the Year (60 years and over), Young Australian of the Year (16 to 30 years) and Australia’s Local Hero.
Nominations for the Australian of the Year Awards can be made online at www.australianoftheyear.org.au, or with a nomination form available from Commonwealth Bank branches, or by calling 1300 655 193.
Nominations close at 5pm on Sunday 31 August.
