CASEY police will be stepping up booze bus operations over the Christmas period in an effort to crack down on the number of drink drivers.
Operation Choice, which will focus on drink drivers in the City of Casey, will go for 13 weeks over the summer.
Casey Traffic Management Unit (TMU) recently received a funding boost from the TAC to conduct the operation.
Casey TMU Sergeant Pat McGavigan said the objective of the operation was to prosecute drink drivers.
“Drivers doing the right thing have nothing to fear,” he said.
Casey police were manning last Sunday night’s booze bus operation along Princes Highway in Berwick when more than 870 people were breath tested between 5pm and 10.30pm.
Sgt McGavigan said four drivers were over the legal limit, with the highest reading being .093 followed by another driver with .090 who was also driving while disqualified.
“If you drink and drive you may get away with it but one day you’ll get caught,” he said. “Drinking and driving is not acceptable.”
In addition to Operation Choice, the TMU will also deploy satellite cars to detect drivers who turn off when they see booze buses or use routes to avoid booze buses.
Casey police say they want all motorists to have a safe summer.
“If you have been drinking, think first as to how important your licence is before you drive the vehicle,” Sgt McGavigan said.
“If you drink and drive you will only be able to blame yourself for the consequences of your actions.”
