THE RSPCA is investigating reports of headless kangaroos in a Lysterfield South housing estate.
Bronwyn Rosairo, whose property backs onto the Churchill National Park, said she has discovered four decapitated kangaroos in the past year.
She made the most recent discovery last Thursday at a nearby property.
The mother of five notified the City of Casey and RSPCA Victoria last week and the council sent out animal depot staff to collect the dead kangaroo.
However, the council said the kangaroo was not decapitated.
Ms Rosairo said she believed people were killing the kangaroos for fun.
“We live in a very family-orientated area and it’s very distressing for our children to be playing out on the streets and finding headless kangaroos,” she said.
RSPCA Victoria’s inspector of services Greg Boland said anyone involved with killing the kangaroos and decapitating them in this horrendous manner could face two years’ imprisonment or receive a $24,000 fine.
“It’s an act of cruelty and we have documented research that shows that someone who can inflict this on an animal can move on to violence against humans,” Mr Boland said.
City of Casey acting manager of roads and construction Michael Apps said over the past year, the council had received more than 30 requests for the removal of dead kangaroos, with 22 of them in Lysterfield.
He said council staff has not collected any decapitated kangaroos since September 2007.
“Council collected a kangaroo in Lysterfield earlier this month but found the kangaroo’s head tucked under its body,” he said.
Mr Apps said there was no evidence to indicate cruelty to animals.
