COMMUNITY stalwart Fred McCubbin died on Friday doing what he loved most.
The 71-year-old was on his way to the MCG to watch his beloved Swans play the Western Bulldogs in a semi-final.
The passionate Rotarian and veteran educator died after suffering various health complications in the last few years of his life.
Mr McCubbin’s eldest son, Darren, said his father was involved in many community organisations and clubs throughout his 30-odd years of living in Narre Warren.
“He had a passion for the community as well as education,” Darren said.
Mr McCubbin was a past president of the Rotary Club of Berwick and was recognised as a Paul Harris Fellow for his service to the local community.
“One of the greatest joys of his life was seeing them (Sydney) crack it for a premiership in 2005,” Darren said.
“He was going to do something that he loved and I guess he didn’t get to see them get bundled out of the finals.”
Darren said his father loved teaching people – both children and adults.
“He was principal at Narre Warren Primary School and also at Cranbourne South and Hampton Park primary schools.
“He was very good at giving his time to older people who were struggling to read and write. He believed education was a big part of moving forward in life.”
Mr McCubbin is survived by his wife Merle and three children Darren, Shane and Quentin.
His funeral will be held today (Thursday) at the Berwick Anglican Church at 1.30pm.
