MORE than 300 people braved cold temperatures in Narre Warren last Saturday to pay respect to those who served with the Australian defence forces.
The dawn service to mark Anzac Day was full of emotion, with members of the community and ex-service personnel attending the 6am ceremony at the Civic Centre.
Berwick RSL president Les Lucas made the official address, with City of Casey councillors, Holt MP Anthony Byrne and students from Fountain Gate Secondary College laying wreaths at the memorial, as they remembered those who fought for the country.
“The service went really well, with a healthy number of people there to mark the occasion,” he said.
After the ceremony, the Rotary Club of Narre Warren hosted a breakfast in the council chambers.
“The breakfast was well received by the RSL members and the public,” Mr Lucas said.
Fountain Gate Secondary College captains Moiar-Eden and Jonathon read two poems during the breakfast.
Terry McDonald from the Berwick RSL read an inspirational poem to the guests at the breakfast written by his 10-year-old grand-daughter.
“Anzac Day is a time to show respect for sacrifice and courage,” he said.
River Gum Ward councillor Wayne Smith said the dawn service was a time for reflection.
“It’s a great atmosphere with a sombre feeling and a chance to meet old friends,” he said.
