Safety award

WATER safety has earned a Doveton swimming school recognition at the 2009 Victorian Aquatic and Recreation Awards.
The Big Fish Little Fish Swim School, which operates from Freeway Sports Centre Doveton, won the Play it Safe by the Water award at the event held on 29 May.
The school, which has only been running for 12 months, won the award for their strong focus on water safety and for highlighting safe practices at the beach during 2008 Water Safety Week celebrations.
They competed against all other swimming schools across Victoria but were awarded the top honour for showing initiative and commitment to the Play it Safe by the Water key messages in November last year.
They provided students with unique opportunities to experience simulated open water scenarios in a safe and fun way, incorporating displays to familiarise students with beach environments and taught about the importance of red and yellow flags.
Swimming school director Paula Olsson said the school was very excited to win the award. “It was a great team effort,” Ms Olsson said. “We are all very proud of the school and all staff who participated to make it possible.”
