Students learn of stem cell work

A SCIENTIST visited students at Narre Warren South P-12 College to celebrate National Science Week.
The school is taking part in a pilot program called Back to Schools which was put together by the Australian Stem Cell Centre in a bid to answer questions, debunk myths and stimulate discussion about stem cell science.
Narre Warren South P-12 College is one of the 23 schools across the state taking part in the pilot program.
Scientist Nicholas Lam from the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute said he jumped at the chance to talk with secondary school students about his research.
“Stem cell science has captured the imagination of many Victorians, not only because of the potential it offers in terms of curing a wide range of human diseases but also as a career,” he said.
Teacher Anthony Cole said around 80 students in years 10, 11 and 12 learnt about the careers of scientists and biologists during the talk.
