They wished for and caught fish

ALMOST 1000 keen fishers showed up at Casey Fields on Sunday for the Come and Try Fishing Day.
The event began three years ago, and organisers Paul Worsteling and David Kramer from Futurefish Foundation, along with the City of Casey, said they were pleased it continued to be successful, with about 400 children and their families in attendance this year.
The event was the largest of its kind in Australia, and was expected to grow in popularity as there were already 390 children on the waiting list for next year, Mr Kramer said.
There were plenty of fish to catch, as Fisheries Victoria released 400 trout into the lake prior to the event.
About 20 volunteers lent a helping hand.
They taught the children how to fish, kept the burley flowing, untangled lines and re-baited hooks.
At the end of each session the children were given a brand new rod and reel combo from local retailer Tackleworld Cranbourne.
The children were also given the choice to have there catch filleted and take it home for the family.
Celebrity Chef Ken Parker was at the event and cooked up a feast with his popular ‘trout souvlaki’ and also showcased many ways to convince children to eat more fish.
Casey parent Karen Carpenter said her children had a fantastic time at the event.
“It was a magnificent day. My kids had a wonderful time trying to catch a rainbow trout and were thrilled to receive a free fishing rod,” she said.
“As a resident of Casey, I just wanted to extend my many thanks to Paul Worsteling, David Kramer, the City of Casey and all the volunteers who put on a great family day!”
