Ice-cream fan licks the competition

By Kelly Yates
‘PEANUT Cookie-Burra Dough’. That’s the name of a new flavour of Ben and Jerry’s ice-cream created by Rebecca Hewat, a staff member at Kambrya College in Berwick.
Ms Hewat won the competition to develop a uniquely Australian name for the ice-cream, as part of American brand’s launch downunder.
Ben and Jerry’s started the search for a fair-dinkum Aussie name for one of its chunk-busting flavours back in August.
More than 3000 Australians had a crack at the ‘Do Oz a Flavour’ competition, but the cream of the crop was Ms Hewat’s creation.
The 24-year-old, who describes herself as an “ice-cream fanatic”, said she jumped at the chance to name the ice-cream.
“I travelled to American in 2006 and became a massive fan of Ben and Jerry’s ice-cream,” she said.
“There was a lot of brainstorming involved. I came up with a long list of possible names but I had a good feeling about Peanut Cookie-Burra Dough.”
The Peanut Cookie-Burra Dough ice-cream is malt ice-cream with globs of peanut butter and cookie dough and a peanut butter swirl.
“It tastes like really sweet peanut butter,” she said.
Ms Hewat, who has been working at the school for three years, said as part of the competition she had won a year’s supply of Ben and Jerry’s ice-cream.
She was flown up to Sydney for the grand opening of the Manly Scoop Shop on 28 November to see her ice-cream scooped up to Sydney residents and meet the founders, Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield.
“It was great to see my flavour name displayed in the shop,” Ms Hewat said. Ben and Jerry’s brand manager Caroline Simpson said it was hard to pick a winner in the competition as they had so many clever and funny entries.
“We were looking for something quirky, product related and linked to Australia, and we think we’ve found the right mix in Rebecca’s Peanut Cookie-Burra Dough entry,” Ms Simpson said.
