VOLUNTEERS at Transit drop-in centre served up a festive feast for their final free meal day for the year.
Transit, which runs out of Narre Warren Christian Church, provides a free meal, friendship and support to those who are marginalised and lonely within the local community.
About 10 volunteers dish up a nutritious hot meal, followed by dessert, every Wednesday between 10am and 2pm.
Pastor Keith Vethaak from Narre Warren Christian Church said Transit, which started in April this year, has continued to grow.
“We fed 12 people the first time and it has grown steadily to about 35 people each week,” Pastor Vethaak said.
“We expect that to continue to grow to about 50 to 60 next winter.”
He said the centre has become not only a place for a free feed, but has given those who attend a place to make friends and socialise.
“It has given many of them a sense of community,” he said.
“We had one mother who had been housebound for a long time and Transit gave her the confidence to get out there again.”
Age is not a barrier for the volunteers, with one volunteer, Evelyn, still helping out in the kitchen at 90 years of age.
Pastor Vethaak would like to encourage people to volunteer next year. Transit will kick off again in the New Year on 3 February. For more information, contact 9796 8966 or 0438 398 594.
