NATIONAL Reconciliation Week was marked by the raising of the indigenous, Torres Strait islander, Victorian and Australian flags at the City of Casey Civic Centre in Narre Warren on Thursday 27 May.
Community representatives, including local indigenous elders from the Wurundjeri and Bunurong communities, joined with members of the City of Casey Access and Inclusion Advisory Committee and school students to acknowledge and celebrate the occasion.
“We come together as a step towards healing; a fitting beginning to National Reconciliation Week and a wonderful opportunity to bring together people who are genuinely trying to improve the relationship between indigenous and non-indigenous people,” Casey mayor Lorraine Wreford said at the flag-raising event.
“This is an opportunity for the City of Casey to confirm and renew its commitment to the reconciliation process and demonstrate a willingness to work closely with indigenous Australians toward a future founded on mutual respect and appreciation.”
