Seniors stay connected

COMMUNITY groups can now apply for Telstra Connected Seniors grants to help seniors stay connected.
The grants aim to help senior citizens learn about new-age communications technology such as mobile phones and the internet.
The grant amounts range up to $5000 for local community organisations and up to $50,000 for state and territory-based organisations.
Telstra Country Wide Area general manager for Melbourne Metro South East Vicky Allen said the Telstra Connected Seniors workshops were perfect for helping for seniors make the most of modern-day communications.
“Telstra Connected Seniors workshops are conducted in a friendly and inviting environment where seniors can learn at their own pace alongside friends and neighbours,” Ms Allen said.
“We’re never too old to learn new technology, and seniors are always surprised at just how much they can easily do online, such as banking, shopping, finding out about new interests and joining social groups. Attendees will also learn how to send and receive emails, photos and text messages. Head of the Public Libraries Association of Australia Ross Duncan said library services across the country received $237,000 worth of grants from Telstra in the previous grant round.
Eligible community organisations can apply for Telstra Connected Seniors grants at www.telstraseniors.com.au until 4pm on 2 December.Organisations that have previously received grants and successfully completed their training can re-apply for further Telstra Connected Seniors funding in this round.
