A proud heritage

A COLLECTION of artwork called The Cultural Ecology of Cranbourne was launched at the Balla Balla Community Centre last month in front of over 200 people.
The unveiling formed part of a series of People in Place events which occur throughout Casey.
The artwork was designed by Boon Wurrung artist Adam Magennis and includes a collection of outdoor art panels.
“This artwork represents a cross section of the significant cultural landscape of this region,” City of Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon said.
“The traditional owners are an important part in our history and initiatives such as these allow us to honour them,” she said.
She said Adam’s pieces are sure to be admired by many who visit the centre.
The series of 10 metal panels depicts the landscape, flora, fauna and natural resources of this region, where 2000 generations of Boon Wurrung and Wurundjeri families gathered.
The collection celebrates local indigenous heritage and represents a deep connection to the history of the land on which Balla Balla Community Centre now stands.
Also unveiled at the event were new multicultural plaques at the Wall of Global Friendships, contributed by the Afghan, Chinese Xinjiang and Romanian communities.
Cr Stapledon was joined by leaders from each community group to present the plaques which are now displayed in the outdoor area of the centre.
“The wall celebrated and acknowledges Casey’s diverse cultural community, and unifies various ethnic groups in the shared message of friendship and good will,” Cr Stapledon said.
She said the plaque was a ‘small token of a heritage we are proud to display’, and expressed her hope that in time, all multicultural communities in Casey will have a plaque displayed.
The event also acknowledged the traditional land owners and the cultures that make-up the City of Casey today.
People in Place events offers free live entertainment, activities, demonstrations, displays, giveaways and information on services available in the City of Casey.
These events are held throughout the year to welcome new and established residents to the City of Casey.
