Comets take sweet revenge

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD

Seeking redemption for its early season loss against Cairnlea, the Casey Comets made amends with a 5-0 win at home.
After kicking three goals within the first 15 minutes, it was clear Casey were out for vengeance against Cairnlea, atoning for the round one game that slipped from its grasp.
Coach Ian Williamson was very pleased with his side’s start, but felt they fell away slightly during the middle of the game.
“We got some great goals early in the match, but we fell asleep for a little bit after that,” Williamson said.
“We weren’t being as creative as we could’ve been; we were a bit too one-dimensional.”
Casey responded to Williamson’s instructions in the second half, piling on another two goals in a comprehensive victory. The win was one of Alex Gummer’s best for the Comets, dominating play and kicking two goals to boot. Taryn Browne and Brittany Dudley-Smith also played important roles for Casey, each with a goal apiece, while Rachel Binning was very solid in the back half and added a goal of her own to the team’s tally.
Williamson was very pleased with the way in which his charges were able to dismantle Cairnlea’s game plan.
“When the opposition goes defensive on you, you have to work out how to break it down,” he said.
“When we are able to play our type of game and control the play, we are very exciting.”
The Casey Comets remain fifth on the ladder, and will travel to Bulleen this week to take on the Lions. Williamson said the Comets are perfectly poised to rise up the ladder.
“If you sit in the middle, like we do at the moment, the only way is up,” he said.
In State League 1, Berwick City women had the week off and will face off against Mooroolbark on Friday.
