Refugee artists to star in new exhibition

Narre Warren artists Zia Atahi and Mirwais Janbaz are two of the finalists in this year’s Home Exhibition.

Both were born in Afghanistan and migrated to Australia as refugees.

Zia’s speciality is photography and he has previously worked as a photography mentor in Indonesia and Melbourne.

Mirwais’s artwork is about a balance of dark and light and is shown by illustrations of women struggling in another part of the world.

He has participated in many group exhibitions in Islamabad and Rawalpindi of Pakistan and Canada.

“Art for me is not decorative, political or commercial it’s expressive”, he said.

Their artwork will be put on display from 18 October to 24 November at the Walker Street Gallery in Dandenong.

Home is a celebration of Dandenong’s cultural diversity and it connects artists to mentors which increases experience across the creative sector.
