Collision closes High Street

Berwick’s High Street (Princes Highway) has been closed to inbound traffic between Bryn Mawr Boulevard and Clyde Road after a collision occurred this afternoon.

There is currently one lane open for outbound vehicles, while citybound motorists have been told to detour via the Princes Link Highway, Monash Freeway and Clyde Road, or find an alternative route.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said that paramedics were called out to the scene of the crash at approximately 3.20pm on Wednesday 3 March to what appeared to be a serious incident, but has since been downgraded.

A woman believed to be in her 80’s has been taken to Dandenong Hospital for medical treatment, but the extent of her injuries are unknown at this time.

The spokesperson said that only one patient had been transported to hospital from the scene at this stage.

Andrew Crook, a spokesperson for the Victorian Department of Transport said that emergency services were currently on the scene and thankfully, the collision “doesn’t appear to be as serious as initially thought”.

“While it initially looked pretty serious, our incident response crew has been able to move the vehicles off the road now,” Mr Crook said.

Mr Crook said he believed that High Street (Princes Highway) had been closed “simply because of where the vehicles ended up on the road” but emergency responders were already reopening extra lanes near the incident.

Victoria Police are on site managing the closure and investigating the incident, and will reopen the road as soon as it is safe to do so.

More to come.
