Front: Madeline McCarthy.GUIDES throughout the world celebrated World Thinking Day on Tuesday 22 February with 150 enthusiastic girls from across Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia coming together to commemorate the special day.
Forty leaders also joined in to celebrate at Kooronga campsite, Police Paddocks, Endeavour Hills.
The day was planned around the theme of the Commonwealth Games, with each of the 17 districts choosing a Commonwealth country to represent.
After the opening ceremony, girls placed messages of goodwill to athletes from each of their chosen countries onto a “friendship” tree.
These messages were then delivered to the athletes at the Commonwealth Games Village in Melbourne before the games began.
Each district also provided activities, games, songs or crafts for the girls to take part in as they travelled around the Commonwealth Games Village.
Thinking Day is the joint birthday of the founders of the guide (and scouts) movement, Lord Robert and Lady Olave Baden-Powell.
On this day every guide worldwide is encouraged to think of the millions of other Girl Guides and Girl Scout members around the world.
Each year, the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts encourages a different focus for guides worldwide to think about. In 2006 the World Thinking Day theme is adolescent health. Guides are being encouraged to think about, talk about and do something about their well being and other teenage health issues.
World Guide Thinking Day is a major fundraiser and educational event for girls and young women worldwide. The girls are encouraged to think about their guiding friends overseas and to make a voluntary contribution to help the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) for the development of Guiding throughout the world. The local event resulted in almost $150 being contributed to the fund.
