FIRST-YEAR Casey Scorpions captain Kyle Matthews was buzzing in the rooms after Saturday’s thrilling finals victory over the Northern Bullants at Casey Fields.
Not even the presence of ice packs on both legs could sour what was clearly a proud moment for him.
“It’s great – I’m ecstatic. I can’t get over it,” the two-time VFL team of the year recipient beamed.
“It’s my first finals win as captain and the club’s first finals win in seven years.”
Matthews said the players were keen to atone for last year’s elimination final loss to Port Melbourne at the same venue.
“We gave away a really good opportunity (in 2007), but we’ve really made up for it this year,” Mathews said.
“We proved we should have been in the top four, really.”
And while Matthews knows there are plenty of hurdles to clear yet – starting with Werribee on Sunday – he allowed himself to think about what it would be like if the Scorpions were to win their seventh VFA/VFL premiership and first since 1999.
“I’d bottle the feeling and keep it forever. I wouldn’t sell it to anyone,” he said.
