Kids dance up a storm or two

CRANBOURNE youngsters did their bit to provide some much-needed rain for the state last week.
Groups of kids have been busy rain dancing over the last fortnight to help fill reservoirs and water the parched ground.
The children were participating in a rain dance program at the Australian Garden of the Royal Botanic Gardens of Cranbourne.
Kids were treated to a story telling, made rain shakers using empty plastic bottles and gravel, seeds and other treasures from the gardens, made botanic music, and rain danced down the serpentine path to the rock pool waterway.
Sharon Willoughby, from the Gardens, said the holiday program was very successful.
“Even more so because they broke the drought with all the rain we had last week,” she said.
“The kids obviously worked hard at their rain dancing.”
Other programs run at the gardens over the holidays included a twilight highlight with experienced guides, a groovy gum leaf art workshop, water fairies story telling, a lesson in growing plants, a Water Wise show from Carp Productions, and an Aboriginal dreaming tour.
Ms Willoughby said she had been impressed by the large number of families who had come to the garden over the holidays.
“Lots of children have been wading in the rock pool on warm days,” she said.
The holiday program runs every school holidays.
