Nutcracker pulls the fans

FIVE hundred students from Cathy-Lea Academy of Performing Arts performed an upbeat version of the traditional tale of “The Nutcracker” to packed houses at The Dandenong Drum Theatre last December.
The production was decreed “the best piece of children’s theatre” audiences had ever seen and featured spectacular scenery, magnificent costumes, awesome lighting effects, and a cast of 500 Cathy-Lea students aged three to adult.
Cathy-Lea Academy of Performing Arts has been in Narre Warren for 15 years and is renowned as one of the best.
The academy boasts an outstanding teaching faculty, including many highly qualified teachers, professional performers and choreographers.
Principal Cathy Howell has recently completed a Masters degree in Education and holds qualifications with several dance associations, including the internationally recognised Cecchetti Ballet Association and the Southern Federation of Dance.
She has also taught in many primary and secondary schools prior to opening her own studio.
Cathy-Lea Academy’s classes cater for students aged three to adult. The curriculum includes everything from traditional ballet, jazz and tap to the latest in hip hop and street styles of dancing including “locking, popping and crumping”.
There are also singing and instrumental music classes and a comprehensive and educationally based drama and acting program.
Cathy-Lea runs an extensive boys’ program that currently has 40 boys taking various performing arts classes and classes for children and adults with disabilities.
In 2007 Cathy-Lea will open a studio at the new Casey College in Narre Warren South.
