REMEMBER the name – Julian Dumitrasku.
The six-year-old taekwondo ace from Endeavour Hills has kicked and punched his way towards two state medals in as many months.
Julian won a silver medal at the Victorian Junior Chang Open, held in April at the State Netball-Hockey Centre and went one better in May, winning gold in the Poomse division.
Amazingly, the prep student at St Paul Apostle North Primary School only started training at Bransden’s Taekwondo in Hallam, a year ago.
Mum, Cathy said Julian loved the friendly atmosphere at the club and the competitive nature of the sport.
“It’s a great club, Julian has made many friends and just loves doing his taekwondo,” she said.
Julian currently competes in the 19-22 kilogram division and has ambitions to take his taekwondo techniques to the world.
“I’d like to compete for Australia one day,” he said.
The pint-sized pocket-rocket has a punching bag in the family garage to keep his arsenal of kicks and punches finely tuned for competitions.
But Cathy said watching Julian compete can be very nerve-racking.
“I get more nervous than he does. That’s just a mother’s instincts,” she laughed.
Despite the taekwondo calendar being full of events and inter-club competitions, Cathy said she didn’t want Julian to burn himself out.
“He’s only just started, we want to make sure he continues enjoying it,” she said.
