A CASEY councillor has slammed an attempt to conduct a report on the behaviour of five wild geese in Narre Warren.
Cr Colin Butler said the unsuccessful move to gauge the gaggle of geese was the most ridiculous motion he had ever seen during his time on council.
Cr Michael Farley raised the issue at Tuesday night’s council meeting.
Cr Farley said the geese needed to be removed from the Patrick Northeast Reserve, near Casey ARC, as they were posing a threat to local shoppers and school children.
“We need to get these geese removed as they are attacking women with shopping bags. They are getting dragged and grabbed,” Cr Farley said.
“I also saw a five-year-old boy also getting pecked the other day.”
Cr Butler said he had no issue with moving the wild animals to another location.
But he said using ratepayers’ money to conduct a report into the behaviour of the geese was unnecessary.
“If we want the geese removed we should just do it. We don’t need a report on it,” Cr Butler said.
“Nobody had ever died of a goose attack. This is just a ridiculous motion.”
Cr Butler said the move by Cr Farley was an attempt to gain some cheap publicity before local government elections in November.
“This is the worst notice of motion in my six years on council.”
Cr Farley defended his decision.
“They are not mixing well with the human population.”
He suggested Myuna Farm in Doveton as a possible place for the geese to be relocated to. The fate of fluffy feathered animals is still up in the air with a majority of councillors voting against the report.
