POLICE are investigating a serious assault in Berwick last weekend after two men were attacked by two carloads of men believed to be armed with knives, golf clubs and garden stakes.
Detective Senior Constable David Measham from the Narre Warren police station told the News the alcohol fuelled assault began at Blitz Nightclub at about 1am on Sunday.
He said the altercation began outside the venue on the corner of Clyde Road and Greaves Road and then continued at a Bounty Way home in Berwick, after the two cars followed the pair home.
Both men, aged 18 and 23, were rushed to Casey Hospital with serious injuries.
An anonymous witness at Blitz Nightclub said the brawl that erupted at the front of the club was “massive”, with more than three police vehicles attending.
Police say they are not only concerned about the large number of alcohol fuelled assaults which occur on a weekly basis in the City of Casey, but are also worried that the attackers are now following people home.
Detective Sergeant Garry Kear said last weekend’s incident was the first case he had seen where attackers had followed those attacked home.
“It’s very unusual for the offenders to follow the victims home like that,” he said.
Det Sgt Kear said it was alarming police that attackers were commonly also using weapons.
“They are arming themselves with anything they can get their hands on,” he said.
According to police, Blitz Nightclub had attended to its care of duty and had dealt with its patrons as required.
Police were gearing up for the Christmas period where there was an increase in the number of street incidents.
“We are called to more house parties where youths spill out onto the streets. The situations are usually a mixture of alcohol and drug consumption,” Det Sgt Kear said.
Police are calling for witnesses who may have seen the altercation at Blitz Nightclub to contact Detective Senior Constable David Measham at the Narre Warren police station on 9705 3115.
