OPERATION CARE set up in Cranbourne this week as police continued the highly visible initiative aimed at targeting the number of drivers committing crime and traffic offences.
Police from the Casey Traffic Management Unit, Casey Response Unit and general duties officers from Narre Warren, Cranbourne and Endeavour Hills blocked part of Camms Road in Cranbourne on Tuesday from 2pm to 6.30pm.
Senior Constable Allen Inderwisch from the Casey Traffic Management Unit (TMU) told the News police chose to set up along Camms Road after receiving several complaints about drivers speeding and driving unregistered vehicles in the area.
Police caught one driver for drink driving, one unlicensed driver and found five unregistered vehicles.
Police also issued seven defect notices.
One driver was charged with driving an unsafe vehicle.
Sen Const Inderwisch said police caught a driver not displaying his P-Plates and two other probationary drivers not carrying their licences.
Police charged a driver for not complying with transfer requirements for a vehicle, while members from the Casey Response Unit arrested a man who was wanted for outstanding warrants relating to criminal matters.
The man has been bailed to appear at the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court at a later date.
Sen Const Inderwisch said police were happy they weren’t getting as many drink drivers as they initially thought.
“Drivers are finally getting the drink driving message,” he said.
Police are concerned about the growing trend of offences committed by probationary and learner drivers.
Operation CARE will run until March.
