Kids booze plea

IN AN attempt to drive down the risk of harm caused by underage drinking, Casey Council and the Casey Alcohol Accord members are urging adults not to supply people under 18 with alcohol.
The City of Casey has developed a poster ‘Don’t buy it for them’, which is supported by the Casey Alcohol Accord, to remind parents about the risks of underage drinking.
Supplying alcohol to anyone under 18 in a private residence without the consent of their parents risks a hefty fine of up to $7000.
City of Casey mayor Sam Aziz said the State Government law would encourage adults to become more accountable for underage drinking problems in Casey.
He said adults were in a powerful position to guide young people and work towards creating a solution to the negative social trend.
“Adults need to be aware of the risks of alcohol related harm that can emanate from underage drinking, including the potential to negatively impact the safety and health of young people and the wider community,” said Cr Aziz.
“Drinking alcohol before turning 18 puts young people at risk of getting into dangerous situations and compromising their health.”
VicHealth reports that drinking alcohol before the age of 18 can put young people at risk of short and long-term related harm including social embarrassment, injuries, brain damage and death.
The Casey Alcohol Accord is a partnership that aims to contribute to the improved health, well-being and safety of residents and visitors in the City of Casey by fostering a culture of respect and responsible behaviour in the community.
