A FAMILY of four had a rude awakening when a car smashed into their Berwick house last week.
Jeanette and Ray Bevan said there had been several accidents near their house on Regent Close near the intersection of Ernst Wanke Road and Jerilderie Drive.
They are now calling on the council to implement barriers to prevent future tragedies.
The couple, along with their 13-year-old son Lachlan and 11-year-old daughter Gabby, were sleeping when they were woken up by the car which crashed into their lounge room at 4am.
She said there was no driver in the car and police were investigating the incident. She said it was fortunate that no-one was injured in the incident, and thought if barricades were erected, the crash would have never occurred.
“We are really grateful that with everything that could have gone wrong, no-one was injured. The car hit a vulnerable part of our house just metres from our bedroom and a metre from the gas and electricity,” she said.
“I would like to think the barricades would have prevented the car going through the windows.
There are a lot of accidents at that intersection and we would like to see barricades there, not only to protect our house but for the pedestrians who use the footpaths near it. There are many kids who attend the schools in the area.”
The Bevans have contacted Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan, who will be writing to the City of Casey requesting a barrier be put in place at this intersection.
Mr Donnellan said there was a clear need for a barrier at the intersection of Ernst Wanke Road and Jerilderie Drive, considering how busy the road was.
“Ernst Wanke Road is a major thoroughfare for local traffic, and a barrier at this intersection would not only stop this happening again, it would also make it safer for pedestrians,” Mr Donnellan said.
“We’re very lucky that lives were not lost in this accident. It’s clear the road can be made safer with a simple barrier which is common on many T-intersections like this.”
City of Casey Manager of Transport, Paul Hamilton, said the council was aware of the incident and was investigating the circumstances to assess the safety improvements that may be required.
