NINE organisations in the region received grants last week towards health promotion and prevention projects.
A total of $168,000 was awarded to 11 different projects under the South Eastern Melbourne Medicare Local’s (SEMML) Small Grants Program.
The grants will support not-for-profit organisations in south eastern Melbourne in community-based health promotion and prevention projects.
Local schools, community centers and youth support services were among the range of grant recipients.
Successful recipients included Dandenong Neighbourhood House for its ‘cooking with diversity’ program for disadvantage migrant and refugee men, Berwick Chase Primary School for its running and fitness circuit and Upper Beaconsfield Association for its ‘healthy habits at kindergarten age’ project.
Monash Health received two grants for both its ‘Youth Sexual Health in the South East’ and ‘Healthy Teeth Healthy Families’ projects.
Rosewood Downs Primary School was also given a grant for its community garden.
Holt MP Anthony Byrne, La Trobe MP Laura Smyth and SEMML chief executive Anne Peak presented the grants to the successful organisations on Tuesday 23 July.
“Along with acknowledging the contribution made by local community groups in improving the health of our community, these innovative projects have an ongoing benefit for the community’s health and target our disadvantaged community,” Ms Peak said.
Mr Byrne said it was great to be able to present the grants.
“It is wonderful to see so many local organisations benefit from this grant that aims to improve our community’s health through a range of initiatives from developing healthy habits to improving one’s oral hygiene,” he said.
