CRANBOURNE snared its first big scalp in VWFL Division 1, taking apart Darebin 10.6 (66) to 3.2 (20).
Returning to the Eagles colours for the first time since her Youth Girls’ career, Bianca Jakobsson made her Cranbourne senior debut, following a knee injury, and was pivotal in the 46-point victory.
Jakobsson made sure Melbourne would rue dropping her for the AFL Women’s match by slotting five goals, while Kirsten Mcleod drilled three of her own.
Darebin restricted Cranbourne through the third term – leaving Cranbourne coach Shaun Smith to implore his charges to not lower their guard after two great quarters.
Keeping Darebin scoreless in the final term was an emphatic way to follow through on Smith’s request as Cranbourne kicked two more goals to record the victory.
Ash Fennell – filling in for the injured Sammy Franklin (shoulder) – smashed apart the Falcons’ ruck division and outleaped her taller counterparts while Chloe McMillan and Alyssa Kazi were also in the best afield alongside Jessica Olschyna and Lauren Hutchison.
Improvement for the newly formed side is steady and coach Shaun Smith believes the Eagles have plenty left to progress.
Fifth-placed Cranbourne now take on ladder leaders Melbourne Uni on Sunday from 12pm.
In Division 3/4 results, Wyndhamvale thumped Cranbourne 17.15 (117) to 1.2 (8) with a solitary goal from Belinda Czosnek the sum of the Eagles’ attack. Australian cricketer Jessica Cameron booted six goals to show off her all-round sporting credentials with Wyndhamvale. Hallam was edged out 2.11 (23) to Whitehorse 5.10 (40).
