Golfers fire in first round of match play

CARDINIA BEACONHILLS GOLF
THE first round of the Brian Balcombe Match Play event was played on Saturday at Cardinia Beaconhills with the top eight qualifiers in each grade of the club championships competing for a shot at the title.
A Grade players Brian Meneilly, Jordan Denereaz, Matt Van der Kraan and Cameron Whiting won their matches making it through to the second round.
In B Grade, Matt Mytton, Darren Richmond, Michael French and John Williamson won their rounds; and in C Grade, Peter Brown, Jason Hirjee, Wes Dunkley and Graeme Taylor are also through.
The Hillsea Shield was also played on Saturday with Cardinia Beaconhills team scoring 390 points and Portsea scoring 338. The final leg of the Hillsea Shield will be held at Portsea later in the year. Chris Rann returned the best score for Cardinia Beaconhills team with 42 points.
Andrew Hall returned the best score in the A Grade in Saturday’s stableford comp, playing off a handicap of 6 he returned 40 points. Kevan Candy (13) was the B Grade winner with 41 points and Chris Rann (18) won the C Grade with 42 stableford points.
The holes-in-one keep coming this season, this time on Saturday from one of the most difficult par threes – the second hole, courtesy of Jordan Denereaz. Well done Jordan!
The third round of the Beaconhills Cup was played in wintry conditions on Sunday with Leon Russell (19) winning the par comp with -1.
MIDWEEK
Some 68 players competed in Tuesday’s stableford competition. Shane Wheat (7) won A Grade with 42 points. Doug Taylor (25) was the B Grade winner also with 42 points.
Daryl Ottaway (11) returned the best score in Thursday’s par competition with +5 on a countback over runner-up Brian Kingma (10).
WOMEN
Congratulations to Marilyn Ford (12) and Jenny Chandler (13) who won the foursomes championships with a gross score of 176 on Wednesday.
