CASEY Council has moved to extend its chief executive Mike Tyler’s tenure beyond 21 years, without readvertising the position.
Mr Tyler has been the council’s only CEO, installed when the council was created in December 1994.
His position was set to expire in early 2016.
Mayor Mick Morland said Mr Tyler had proven to be “one of local government’s most talented and respected chief executive officers”.
“(The) council has carefully considered what it requires in a CEO before making this decision. It has taken into account the future needs of Casey, and Mr Tyler’s performance.
“Mr Tyler continues to deliver for (the) council, meeting and at times exceeding his performance criteria and therefore it is not necessary to advertise the position.”
In October 2013, councillors rejected calls to sack Mr Tyler after he was found guilty of failing to properly disclose a conflict of interest to the council and mayor Shar Balmes.
Dandenong Magistrates’ Court declined to fine or convict Mr Tyler.
It instead ordered him to pay $1000 to his partner’s fundraising efforts for a breast cancer charity, to pay $9000 in agreed prosecution costs and placed him on a 12-month good behaviour bond.
After the case’s resolution, then-mayor Amanda Stapledon said the councillors were unified in their support for Mr Tyler.
“Under Mr Tyler’s leadership, the City of Casey has enjoyed sound financial management and delivered record investment in community infrastructure and services for one of the fastest growing cities in Australia.”
Councillors will vote on a resolution to extend Mr Tyler’s contract at a council meeting on 6 October.
