How to own a pet

CASEY Council has released a list of tips to help pet owners keep their animals safe.
These tips include getting pets micro-chipped and registering them with the council, ensuring they are confined to a property and obeying the council’s by-laws in relation to animals.
In the past financial year the council received almost 4000 complaints in relation to dogs “causing nuisances” in the community, predominantly for being loose and for dog attacks.
During that time, 1500 dogs were impounded and 2350 infringement notices were issued to owners for dog related matters.
It was a similar situation with cats, with the council receiving more than 1215 complaints from residents in relation to felines causing problems by wandering at large, particularly at night, fighting, defecating in gardens and trespassing on residential properties.
The council impounded more than 1135 cats in the past year and issued more than 170 infringement notices to cat owners.
“Pets are a wonderful source of comfort, friendship and entertainment but owning them brings responsibilities to ensure they are valued members of your family,” Casey Mayor Mick Morland said.
